SportsMEDIA Technology Corporation Provides the NBC Sports Group with Core Technology for Unprecedented Triple Crown Broadcast

SportsMEDIA Technology Corporation (SMT) has announced it will supply the NBC Sports Group with a host of SMT products to support their broadcast of the Triple Crown on NBC Sports and VERSUS.

The NBC Sports Group will broadcast all three legs of the upcoming Triple Crown races; the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, unifying the races under one network for the first time since 2005. SMT’s technology will provide television viewers with new visual cues and real-time statistical information enhancing the entertainment value of the broadcast.

The DMX Switchboard

SMT’s DMX Switchboard, the company’s signature customizable data integration product, has been custom engineered for the Triple Crown. The DMX Switchboard, the central hub of SMT’s overall technical solution, absorbs, collates and synchronizes multiple on-site live data feeds into a proprietary SMT Live Horse Racing database. The DMX Switchboard provides up to 16 separate channels for integrating live data and time-code synchronized data into a mix of on-air and off-air graphics displays both in real-time and replay modes. Additional SMT products plug into the DMX Switchboard to provide features and benefits tailored to three distinct phases of the NBC Sports Groups’ coverage – pre-race analysis, live race presentation, and post-race analysis.

Pre Race:

SMT’s Autograph Ticker accesses the DMX Switchboard to produce a continually updating on-air display of real-time odds and payouts for bets on each Derby horse from live data provided by United Tote, Churchill Downs’ in-house wagering system.

SMT’s Talent Interactive Prompter System (“TIPS”) gives the NBC Sports Group on-air announcers and producers access to SMT’s Live Horse Racing database via individually customized touch-screen displays. TIPS provides on-air talent with efficient behind-the- scenes access to live racing statistics and other real-time information on horses, trainers, and jockeys to promote relevant and effective storytelling.

Live Race Presentation:

SMT’s Live Leaderboard System will show the running order of the top six horses based on data received from Churchill Downs’ newly installed, real-time horse tracking system. This positional data, which updates 30 times per second for each horse, will be available for the first time at this year’s Kentucky Derby, giving SMT’s on-air graphic presentation unprecedented speed and accuracy.

SMT’s Track Map System will show the real-time position of the lead horse on a graphical representation of the track.

SMT’s SMART System will virtually insert “distance to the finish” indicators on the track surface at 200 yards, 100 yards, and 50 yards out. This shows viewers how much track real estate is left as the horses head to the finish line.

Post Race Analysis:

SMT’s ISO Track System allows the broadcaster to identify, point to, and visually track up to two horses simultaneously both live and in replay. Kentucky Derby fans watching from home will see a graphical arrow pointing to each tracked horse. In addition, live data associated with a tracked horse (e.g., speed, current standing in the field, and distance from the finish line or gate) can be displayed and will update on-air in real-time. The ISO Track system uses SMT’s proprietary time-code synchronization server to support live and replay modes. SMT’s ISO Track System, which has been used successfully for IRL auto racing and the Tour de France, will provide the NBC Sports Group with an unprecedented tool for graphically illustrating how the race was won –- or lost.

SMT’s Video Annotation System gives NBC Sports and VERSUS virtual telestration capability on race replays for highlighting the most important aspects of the race and to give viewers a deeper understanding of the in-race dynamics.

SMT’s CG Interface System provides comprehensive data integration and real-time information to three dedicated Chyron Duet machines on-site.

Spike TV has selected third season of 13 episodes of its first original scripted comedy series, “Blue Mountain State.”

Produced by Varsity Pictures’ Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett and Lionsgate, “Blue Mountain State” experienced significant ratings growth in season 2 compared to season 1, delivering a +33% increase in Men 18-34, +50% in Men 18-24, and +14% in Men 18-49.

Denise Richards will return for a second season as Coach Daniels sexy, sharp-tongued ex-wife, Debra.

“Blue Mountain State” follows the on and off-field antics of college football powerhouse, Blue Mountain State. Former NFL running back and veteran actor, Ed Marinaro (“Hill Street Blues”), stars as no-nonsense Coach Daniels. In season 3, Coach Daniels will have his authority challenged when the boosters force him to hire a hotshot offensive coordinator/head coach-in-waiting. HBO Sports Presents Doubleheader Coverage ‘HBO Boxing After Dark’ On Saturday, March 5

HBO Sports will present live doubleheader coverage when HBO Boxing After Dark: Saul Alvarez Vs. Matthew Hatton And Daniel Ponce De Leon vs. Adrien Broner is seen Saturday, March 5 at 10:30 p.m. ET from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Cal. The executive producer of HBO BOXING AFTER DARK is Rick Bernstein; producer, Jon Crystal; director, Mike Sheehan.

The HBO Sports team of Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

At the ripe age of 20, Alvarez has already proven he can hang with the big boys and is coming off a year that saw him win all five of his bouts, four via knockout.

Matthew Hatton will draw on a wealth of experience to counter Alvarez’ likely early-round aggressiveness. In 2010 he stepped out of his big brother’s shadow and made a name for himself, swiftly taking the European community boxing by storm.

Now, Hatton’s grit and determination will be put to the test by his foe’s daunting speed and brash fearlessness with a title belt on the line.

Kicking off the night will be a thunderous junior lightweight bout featuring Daniel Ponce De Leon (41-2, 34 KOs), training out of Huntington Park, Cal., and undefeated 21-year-old Adrien Broner (19-0, 16 KOs) of Cincinnati.

Ponce De Leon, 30, is a former junior featherweight champ who is moving up in weight, aiming to hand Broner his first loss. CBS And Turner Announces NCAA Tournament Coverage Plans

CBS and Turner have announced the road map for the next month’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament coverage.

CBS, TBS, TNT and TruTV will present 67 games nationally, from the new four play-in games to the Final Four and national championship match, across the platforms as national games.

TruTV begins with the newly created quartet of first round games “The First Four” to be broadcast on Tuesday, March 15 and Wednesday, March 16 beginning at 6:30 PM. CBS and Turner will gloss them up by having its Final Four crew of Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg and Turner NBA analyst Steve Kerr do the Tuesday doubleheader with the ever excitable Gus Johnson and Len Elmore working the Wednesday games.

Officially known as the second round, Thursday and Friday games will be staggered in such a way so that viewers will be able to see more of the contests, since they’ll be scattered between the four channels.

As recently as last year, when CBS had all the games, start times would be delayed by 5-15 minutes during the windows. Now, there will be enough of a delay so that there will be “wall to wall basketball from noon to midnight,” Aresco said.

In addition, while CBS has not programmed a game in the 5 p.m. ET window on Thursday and Friday to allow its affiliates to show news and syndicated fare, TNT, TBS and TruTv will be able to show the tournament in that slot. And, on Sunday nights, where CBS would bunch games into three regional windows so as not to bump out “60 Minutes,” the new arrangements will permit the Turner channels to carry games in the evening window.

There are, of course, potential, shall we say, inconveniences to the new set up. In the past, if a game became a blowout, CBS programmers like Aresco and Chairman Sean McManus, could switch out most of the audience to a more competitive contest. Now, the telecasting channel will have to ride out those games, since they are all national contests.

“For the most part, we’ll be sticking with our games and we’ll be praying for competitive games,” said Aresco.

And then there’s the possibly prickly issue of how to strike the balance between getting teams with national followings, like, for instance Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina or Kansas who might blow out early round opposition into the widest distribution versus showing more competitive games between relatively anonymous teams, not to mention keeping all the televising partners happy.

“We’re just not sure yet how we’re going to do that and Turner’s not either,” said Aresco. “We’re going to sit down with them and figure out which games really belong on which networks.”

Logistically, the menus on each channel will be static on Thursday and Friday, meaning viewers won’t get an early game in a doubleheader from one site and the second game from another. But the channels will be able to change from one location to the other between afternoon and night sessions, so, for instance, CBS could show a doubleheader from Charlotte in the afternoon and from Chicago at night, while, TBS, for example, could do the reverse.

Also, announcers could bounce from channel to channel, so CBS viewers may, for instance, get Marv Albert and Kerr for games, while Nantz and Kellogg might be seen on TBS, TNT or TruTV.

“From our standpoint, it will be fun, but I will be glad if we get through it OK and I think we will,” said Aresco.

On the Carolina Panthers plan for the No. 1 overall pick…

Last year, it was all about defensive tackles up top – [Ndamukong] Suh or [Gerald] McCoy. This year, it’s going to be defensive ends – Bowers or Fairley. Da’Quan Bowers, defensive end from Clemson, he wreaks havoc in the backfield. The Panthers just hired a defensive-minded head coach in Ron Rivera, they’re trying to build from the inside-out. That first pick, given who’s there and not there from the quarterback position, doesn’t really make sense for the Panthers to address it [at No. 1]. Look for them to go defense. The scouts I’ve talked to believe the early leader in the clubhouse is Bowers, but Nick Fairley out of Auburn will have plenty of time to make up ground, should he want to do so.

On if Auburn QB Cam Newton is a first-round pick…

It’s quite possible, and again we have a ways to go in the evaluation process. Certainly a first-round talent. You’re going to start to hear about the Redskins with that No. 10 pick. In Mike Shanahan’s offense, he loves to have mobile quarterbacks, whether it’s John Elway, Jake the Snake [Plummer], Jay Cutler; it’s really been a staple. Cam Newton, we know he’s from Auburn and the Redskins have taken first-round picks from Auburn. Jason Campbell didn’t work out a few years back, but that was a different regime, so we’ll have to see. With San Francisco in the top 10 as well, they’re looking for a quarterback, I’m not sure if Newton slips out of the top 10.
