Verizon Wireless ‘COW’ Offers Enhanced 3G Coverage, Capacity for Penn State Football Fans

Verizon Wireless has installed a temporary cell site—called a COW, or Cell On Wheels—near Penn State University’s Beaver Stadium to provide additional 3G network coverage and calling capacity just in time for football season. The site will enhance coverage in the north and east area outside Beaver Stadium including the RV parking lot.

This service enhancement means more customers attending home football games can use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

“Ensuring our customers can count on their wireless devices for communication, news and more at major events is part of our ongoing commitment to network reliability,” said Mark Frazier–president, Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia Region, Verizon Wireless. “We look at how our customers’ usage patterns are changing at events like these and utilize this information to make sure we stay well ahead of their demand.”

The COW is a fully functional, generator-powered cell site, which has the same call capacity as a freestanding cell site. This network improvement is part of Verizon Wireless’ continual effort to expand coverage, improve capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Pennsylvania and throughout the country.

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has deployed its 4G LTE Network in 117 metropolitan areas coast to coast, including State College, covering more than half of all Americans. During 2011, the company will continue to expand its 4G footprint, bringing its 4G LTE network to more than 185 million Americans by year-end. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE wireless network is the fastest and most advanced 4G network in America and offers speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G network.

The company’s ongoing network investment in Pennsylvania now totals nearly $1.8 billion. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed—$6 billion on average every year—to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services.

Verizon FiOS TV To Present Multiple 3D Films On Demand

Verizon FiOS TV will present more 3D programming during the next two months, with the launch of 10 feature films on demand.

Beginning with the premiere of “Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore” on Nov. 16, and ending with “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “Step Up 3D” in December, Verizon will make a series of video-on-demand titles available in 3D throughout the next two months. More titles will follow early next year.

The seven other 3D films, which will be available beginning Nov. 16, are: “Chicken Little,” “Bolt” and “Meet the Robinsons” from Walt Disney Pictures, and “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” “Under the Sea,” “Deep Sea” and “NASCAR” from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.

Tricia Lynch, director of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon said “Verizon is continuing to develop 3D experiences for our FiOS TV customers, and now that includes access to video-on-demand titles available at their convenience. This selection of 3D movies allows our customers to see what 3D on FiOS TV is really like – with the advanced picture quality and sound that makes FiOS the ultimate home-entertainment experience.”

The 3D VOD movies are available to all FiOS TV customers across the country who have a 3D television set, 3D glasses and a high-definition set-top box. FiOS TV customers can find the 3D movies in the “High Definition” VOD folder, under HD 3D and the “Movies” VOD folder under 3D Movies.

The launch of these 3D movies marks Verizon’s latest major 3D initiative this year. On Sept. 2, Verizon exclusively produced and broadcast the first televised National Football League game in 3D, the preseason match-up between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

And on July 10 and 11, the company broadcast the first Major League Baseball games in 3D, between the New York Yankees and the Seattle Mariners.

The 3D movies join FiOS TV’s leading VOD service, which includes 18,000 monthly titles. In addition, FiOS offers a broad collection of programming, with more than 520 all-digital channels including up to 140 HD channels.

FiOS also provides next-generation interactive services including an advanced interactive media guide; social networking, news and entertainment widgets; remote DVR management via broadband or cell phone; and more.

Verizon Launches Spanish-Language Interactive ‘Zona Latina’

Verizon has announced the launch of FiOS’ Spanish-language programming ‘Zona Latina’ for FiOS TV customers. Zona Latina offers access to sports, international news, free video-on-demand titles, Hispanic music, Univision’s exclusive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Verizon’s Spanish Language Package.

Zona Latina can be access on the FiOS TV Widget home screen and in the featured section of FiOS TV Widgets. Zona Latina offers access to Spanish-language programming including an interactive guide, premium movies and video-on-demand (VOD) titles.

Verizon Approved To Launch FiOS TV Service in Cohasset, Mass.

Verizon Communications has announced that it will offer FiOS TV service to residents of Cohasset, Mass. Verizon has received approval for 10 years from Cohasset Board on Monday, Nov. 30 to launch its FiOS TV service in Cohasset.

Verizon is to deliver FiOS TV service via the most advanced all-digital, fiber-optic network straight to customers’ homes.

Cohasset will be 105th Massachusetts community to receive Verizon’s FiOS TV service.

Home Media DVR: Subscribers never have to miss a game because they’re away or because the family wants to watch something else on the big screen. Verizon’s advanced DVR lets subscribers record programming on one set that can then be watched on up to six other TV sets in the home. Subscribers can also pause recorded programming on one set and continue to watch it on another – and can take the recorded game to any room without missing a play.

Media Manager: Subscribers can create their own personal half-time show by using Verizon’s Media Manager service to stream photo slide shows, music and videos from their home computer or laptop to their home-entertainment system.

NFL Network: The NFL Network is the only destination for all that happens around the National Football League, on and off the field. Verizon Communications has launched FiOS TV service in Allentown, Pa. Verizon will deliver FiOS TV service, FiOS Internet Service and the Verizon Freedom Essentials unlimited calling plan to Allentown consumers as a bundle.

Verizon’s FiOS TV service delivered over a superior all-fiber optic network initially will be available to more than 3,100 households in parts of Allentown.

Verizon FiOS TV service subscribers will be delivered with 128 high-definition (HD) channels, and more video on demand (VOD) and faster Internet speeds than old-fashioned cable TV.

Verizon FiOS TV To Launch ‘NFL RedZone Channel’ And RedZone Widget

Verizon Communications has announced that it will launch ‘The NFL RedZone channel’ on FiOS channel 335 in standard definition and channel 835 in high-definition. This new channel on FiOS TV will be launched on Sunday Sept. 13 and is available every Sunday during the season, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

FiOS TV Subscribers can make unique on-screen ordering to receive the NFL Network produced ‘The NFL RedZone channel’ to be launched on September 13. Subscribers can confirm and receive the NFL RedZone actions in minutes.

FiOS TV subscribers will also see the new RedZone Widget from this week, this widget will give easy access to NFL stats and the RedZone channel. Customers who subscribe to the NFL RedZone channel also can use a unique feature of Verizon’s new RedZone Widget to set on-screen alerts for whenever a team is moving into the 20-yard line. Once set, the alerts will pop up at the bottom of the TV screen while a subscriber is watching any channel on FiOS TV.

Verizon To Launch More HBO HD, Cinemax HD VOD Content

Verizon’s FiOS TV has announced that it will be launching HBO and Cinemax HD programming to its Video on Demand lineup. FiOS TV customers with Cinemax and HBO subscription will have access to new HBO HD and Cinemax HD VOD channels. New launches will bring 150 hours of programming from each channel providing more HD programming from Cinemax and HBO than any other provider.

Verizon FiOS TV Movie Package will also be expanded with more on-demand content in HD from The Movie Channel, by doubling the amount of HD VOD content from Starz, and by adding 150 hours of movies on-demand from Encore.

Verizon Wireless Activates A COLT Around Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Verizon Wireless has announced that it has activated a cell on light truck (COLT) in and around Michigan Stadium. COLT is a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity in a specific location — and works especially well in dense areas with large crowds.

COLT is to double the capacity of its high-speed wireless network in Ann Arbor during Football Saturdays when more than 100,000 people assemble to watch the sport.

The COLT enables more Verizon Wireless customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make voice calls; send email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones while enjoying fewer dropped calls and clearer reception.

Greg Haller, president-Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless said, “Year over year, data usage of our Michigan network has nearly doubled and voice usage has grown by nearly 10 percent. Our customers are relying on their phones much more, particularly at major sporting events like college football games. Verizon To Deliver FiOS services To Four Trump Properties in Manhattan

Verizon Communications will deliver FiOS services to the residents of four more Donald Trump apartment buildings in Manhattan using Verizon’s advanced, all-fiber-optic network straight to customers’ homes.

Verizon has recently signed agreement with the Trump Organization to build its all-fiber-network and will bring FiOS TV and FiOS Internet services to Trump Place at 120 Riverside, Trump Place at 200 Riverside, and Trump Place at 220 Riverside and The Heritage at Trump Place. The buildings, which contain 1,264 apartments, are located in the former rail yard at the south end of Riverside Park, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Verizon has already installed all-fiber-network in five other Trump buildings — The Trump World Tower at United Nations Plaza, Trump Park Avenue, Trump Parc, Trump Parc East and 610 Park Avenue and deliver 120 HD channels.
